Baseball Splits Doubleheader Against Manhattanville

Alan Karrtholl went a combined 3-for-6 with one run and one RBI

Purchase, N.Y. -- The baseball team (12-8) defeated Manhattanville (10-12) in the first game of Friday's doubleheader, 13-8. Manhattanville bounced back for a 10-7 win in the second. The game marks the first time these two schools have faced each other on a baseball field.

Sophomore third baseman Alan Kartholl (John Jay/Fishkill) paced the Bombers by going a combined 3-for-6, while junior leftfielder Shane Wolf (Lansing/Freeville) went 2-for-5 and scored three runs.

In game one the Bombers trailed 8-0 before exploding for 13 runs in the seventh inning -- two runs shy of tying the school's record for most runs in an inning set in 1985. Six Bombers reached base on walks and three more reached on hit by pitches. Manhattanville threw two wild pitches and committed three errors. Ithaca produced four hits in the final inning including doubles by senior first baseman Jason Friedman (Whitney Young/Chicago, Ill.) and junior second baseman Todd Czerno (Columbia/Brainard). Six Bombers crossed home plate twice during the inning.

Senior outfielder Jeremy Peters (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica) and Friedman each went 2-for-4 in the game. Peters and Czerno both registered a team-high three RBIs. Czerno went 1-for-3 and scored twice.

In game two the Bombers rallied for another big inning. After falling behind 1-0 after the first, they opened up for six runs in the second. Kartholl, sophomore shortstop Kurt Bednarcyk (Rochester/Fairport), and junior right fielder Eric Ferguson (Columbia/East Greenbush) each hit singles to drive in runs. Kartholl and Bednarcyk scored when Ferguson singled through the left side. Ferguson scored earlier in the inning when Czerno walked with the bases loaded. Ferguson and Czerno both drove in a team-high two runs.

The Bombers added another run in the fifth when Czerno, who went 1-for-3, singled to right field to score Wolf.  Wolf went 2-for-3 and scored two runs in game two. Kartholl went 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored.

The Bombers travel to Mansfield Sunday for a 1 p.m. start.
